FALMOUTH, Maine – Unations II suffered a heartbreaking 3–2 defeat against Maine Mystics on Sunday evening at Falmouth High School in Falmouth, Maine, in UPSL New England Division 1 action.
The hosts came out aggressively and struck first to take an early 1–0 advantage as Maine Mystics controlled much of the opening stages. Unations II gradually settled into the match and found their breakthrough after Paschal Ojatabu won a penalty inside the box. Shawnd Chambers stepped up confidently and converted from the spot to level the score at 1–1.
Both sides created opportunities throughout the remainder of the first half, but neither team could find another breakthrough as the match entered halftime even at 1–1.
Unations II came out strong after the restart and grabbed the lead early in the second half through Alex Egan, who delivered a stunning free kick from nearly 40 yards out to make it 2–1. The visitors nearly extended their advantage moments later, but Maine Mystics responded with an equalizer to bring the match level once again.
The momentum shifted late in the contest when Moe Kadar Yussuf received his second yellow card of the evening, resulting in a red card and forcing Unations II to play the final 15 minutes with 10 men.
Maine Mystics eventually capitalized on the numerical advantage and found the game-winning goal in stoppage time to secure all three points in dramatic fashion.
Despite the tough result, Unations II showed resilience throughout the match and now turn their attention to a crucial home matchup against playoff rivals Dorchester City on Saturday, May 23rd at Stephen Nowak Memorial Field in Holden, Massachusetts, with both sides battling for the final playoff spot in UPSL New England Division 1.
